Day 2 – We must not forget.

Today was our first full day in Budapest, but since our tour didn’t begin until 4, Marilee and I started the day with a leisurely breakfast. For those of you who don’t know me, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.  I can skip any of the others, but if I don’t have breakfast, I feel cheated.  So, it was great to start off with the hotel’s fabulous buffet.

Later we walked along the Danube to the Holocaust Memorial.  This a string of bronzed shoes placed along the seawall in memory of the people who were shot and pushed into the river during WW II.  It was a sobering and heart-breaking exhibit.  I’ve posted some pictures, but they don’t do justice to the horror of this memorial. I have a feeling there will be more reminders of just how inhumane we can be to each other.

Day 1 – Hi from Budapest

After an extremely long flight, Marilee and I arrived in Budapest. We were exhausted but excited.  This is a really different and beautiful city. This is the view from our window. We think this is the Budapest History Museum and the Buda Castle – though we’re taking that off maps and we’re not sure.  We’ll find out when we meet our group in about an hour.  Whatever it is, it’s beautiful.

So, what now?  We’re having a pre-tour dinner with the other early arrivals, and then we’re free until around 4 tomorrow, when the tour actually begins.  So, watch this space.

P.S.   The view from lunch table.

Three More Sleeps

Hair, nails, and toes done.  Today I’m packing.

And as the “littles” say, three more sleeps and I’m off.

Budapest

This time next week, I’ll be in Budapest. To be honest, I don’t know much about it, or Hungary for that matter, even after reading a bit online.  Here’s a brief description I found.

“Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube. Its 19th-century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views.”

Okay, I know that’s not much.  I’ll post more next week, including pictures of my own.

Six Days Left

Six days from now, I’ll board a plane to  Philadelphia, where I’ll meet up with  my friend Marilee, then on to Budapest. I’m starting to get very excited.

On top of everything else I enjoy about traveling, I also love flying.  I know that’s a bit weird, especially when it’s become such a hassle at airports.  Despite that, for me, the flight is part of the enjoyment.  Just get past security and the rest is easy.
